No More Nokia? Windows Phone To Sport New Windows Branding

Microsoft is reportedly planning to drop "Nokia" and "Windows Phone" in branding its mobile phones and will simply go with "Windows."

According to The Verge, a photo of a new Windows phone from My Go was previously leaked and is believed to be the first phone to carry the Windows logo as its brand.

But prior to the release of the My Go handset photos, some documents pertaining to the brand change were leaked last week, according to GeekOnGadgets. The report was later confirmed by The Verge.

According to the report, Microsoft had started dropping "Nokia" from its branding, avoiding the inclusion of "Nokia" when refering to its products and having visitors to Nokia's regional websites redirected to Microsoft managed ones.

In addition, the report claimed that "Lumia" will be the main brand for handheld devices to be produced in the future and will reportedly be called "Microsoft Lumia" instead of its previous "Nokia" prefix.

"As part of our phased transition, we will drop the manufacturer name [Nokia] from product references during the Holiday campaign," stated one of the slides in the leaked documents.

According NDTV Gadgets, the reported re-branding will coincide with the release of "Project Threshold," believed to be Windows 9, as it will also be the operating system for the new sets of handheld and desktop devices, as well as an effort to create a unified brand for its products.

In July, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella reportedly announced the creation of "one single converged operating system for screens of all sizes," which hinted at the specifications of the newest Windows operating system.

British smartphone company My Go was reported to be the first company to work with Windows and using the new brand name for its GoFon GF47W. The smartphone was also reportedly refered to as "yourWindows GoFone" on the company's website, affirming previous reports and speculations about the brand direction of the tech giant.

HTC's new smartphone dropped the name Windows phone and called its latest device in collaboration with the tech company One M8 for Windows.
