Reality Programs are a 'Must' for Idol Groups to Debut?

Recently, there have been many idol group members doing reality programs.

Reality programs and idol groups started back in 2000 with famous groups such as Wonder Girls, Girls' Generation, Big Bang, 2NE1 and others having their own reality programs before debut. Currently, there are many reality programs for rookie groups that have not debuted yet.

Rookie idol groups are serious about reality programs because it is their chance to gain fans even before their official debut. With over a 100 rookie groups, it is hard to make a group known. Having pre-exposure to the public and the media is very important for these rookie groups. Having a reality program is the best way to gain this exposure. Rookie group Big Star's agency stated, "It is very important to gain exposure and fans before debuting. Big Star's fan club is slowly increasing as they are appearing in more broadcasts."

However, in the last half of this year, more than 20 new idol groups will be coming out, making it harder to have their own reality program. Many agencies try to make a 'deal' with broadcasting companies with sums up to the millions. One official stated, "There is a low percentage of just naturally being casted for a program. That is why many times the agencies pay per episode, every time their artist appears on the program. Although it may differ depending on the agency, most agencies have to pay for all the events that happen on the show, making it very costly. However, this method is worth it in the end in helping idol groups become exposed."

Also, just appearing on a reality program is not enough to gain attention. There are so many other similar teams and programs that it is hard to stand out from the crowd. A group must have unique and fresh ideas to show on the program. An official stated, "Honestly, there are already so many groups that have already debuted that not many people will notice the groups that have not debuted yet. Reality program debuts are all similar and sometimes can lower the percentage for the overall program, making it harder for them to become noticed."

It's a problem even if a reality program shows signs of success. After many long years of training and another few of years of being unnoticed can make a strong group, however, having to gain popularity even before their debut can be seen as insufficient for the team. Another official stated, "Most idol groups think, 'I will make it as long as I debut'. However in reality, this is not true. In reality, idol groups must learn to be humble and true. Being famous even before their debut can create a problem. It is important for the people around them to support guide them in the right direction."
