K-Pop Rewind: Fan Club 'In Search Of Dream'

Before he was known as Rain, Jung Ji Hoon debuted in the six member male group Fan Club. Jung Ji Hoon was a rapper within the lineup, which also included Sang Jin and Ho Sang as rappers. Member Frankie Jo was an English rapper and vocalist, with Seong Hyun and Kyo Min completing the lineup.

Fan Club debuted in 1998, a year in which H.O.T and Sechs Kies remained popular. The first album for the group was self-titled, with the track “In Search of Dream” or “Finding The Dream” serving as a revamp of the hit song “Tubthumping” from the British group Chumbawumba.

The video for “In Search of Dream” featured colorful late nineties cinematography and choreography.

Following the cool reception of their 1998 album, Fan Club released a second album in 1999. When the group did not gain additional success following its second release, Fan Club disbanded.

In 2000, Jung Ji Hoon was recruited by Park Jin Young for JYP Entertainment. In 2002, Jung Ji Hoon debuted as the solo artist Rain with his release “Bad Guy.”

Now, Rain is often referred to as the King of K-Pop. However, his humble beginning as a rapper in Fan Club is a testimony to his artistic growth.
