Album Review: Ailee Makes A Triumphant Comeback With 'Magazine' [AUDIO]

On November 10, 2013 Ailee suffered one of the most unimaginable experiences for a female entertainer. Unauthorized nude photos of the singer were leaked by the English Korean entertainment site Allkpop, creating a media frenzy to discredit Ailee as a K-Pop vocalist.

While many performers would have retreated from the public eye, Ailee strongly faced her fans and critics. In her new album, “Magazine,” Ailee constructively channels the pain and frustration for her scandal.

“Magazine” is the third mini album released by the 25-year-old singer, and it demonstrates her resiliency and the brilliance of her vocals. The album contains six tracks including an instrumental version of “Don’t Touch Me.”

Ailee is regarded as one of the most powerful vocalists in Korean entertainment. Her strong point lies within the delivery of ballads like “Goodbye Now.”

The album opens with the uptempo Brit-pop-influenced title track “Don’t Touch Me.” Ailee extends her vocal range in the retro song which addresses a lying, cheating lover.

Ailee is a prime example of an R&B inspired K-Pop vocalist who shines when paired with rappers.

Ailee collaborates with Dynamic Duo (Choiza and Gaeko) on the track “Crazy.” “Crazy” is a brilliant example of Ailee’s ability to collaborate with hip hop artists in a way that is reminiscent of early ‘00s American collaborations like Ja Rule and Ashanti.

“Goodbye Now” is a tender and soulful ballad which exemplifies the emotional complexity of Ailee’s music. One of the most challenging aspects of singing a ballad is conveying emotion which can extend past the visual sensibility of a music video. Ailee emotes on a level that is heart stirring, evoking the vocal mastery of Mariah Carey.

The album then transitions into the pop rock track “Sudden Illness” “Sudden Illness” features building guitar riffs which help to translate the instability of relationships. The track also helps to drive home the overall concept of “Magazine” which is rebirth out of the negativity of a failed relationship.

“Magazine” begins to draw to a conclusion with the track “Teardrop.” “Teardrop” incorporates hip hop instrumentals to create a solid track which also showcases Ailee’s vocals.

The album closes with an instrumental version of the title track “Don’t Touch Me.”

It is wonderful to hear such a strong comeback album from Ailee.

K-Pop fans who are unfamiliar with Ailee should definitely check out “Magazine,” an album which is demonstrative of the triumph of the human spirit over adversity.
