Michael Phelps Suspended From USA Swimming After DUI Arrest: Olympian Forced To Withdraw From 2015 FINA World Swimming Championship Next August!

Michael Phelps just learned that bad actions have consequences.

The Olympic champion has reportedly been suspended from USA swimming following his DUI arrest last week.

"Michael's conduct was serious and required significant consequences," USA Swimming Executive Director Chuck Wielgus told E! News. "Michael has publicly acknowledged the impact of his decisions, his accountability especially due to his stature in the sport and the steps necessary for self-improvement. We endorse and are here to fully support his personal development actions."

Phelps will be suspended from USA swimming for six months and will be forced to withdraw from the 2015 FINA World Swimming Championship in Russia next August.

Additionally, Phelps will not receive monthly payments from USA swimming during his suspension.

The 29-year-old, who holds the record of being the most decorated Olympian in history, was arrested in Baltimore, Maryland on Sept. 30 after a Maryland police officer caught him driving 84 mph in a 45 mph zone.

Phelps was then found to be under the influence.

On the day of his arrest, Phelps made a statement about the incident on Twitter, vowing to take responsibility for his actions.

"Earlier this morning, I was arrested and charged with DUI, excessive speeding and crossing double lane lines," wrote the swimmer. "I understand the severity of my actions and take full responsibility."

"I know these words may not mean much right now," he added, "but I am deeply sorry to everyone I have let down."

Phelps later addressed the public again on Twitter.

"I recognize that this is not my first lapse in judgment, and I am extremely disappointed with myself," he wrote. "I'm going to take some time away to attend a program that will provide the help I need to better understand myself."

"Right now, I need to focus my attention on me as an individual and do the necessary work to learn from this experience and make better decisions in the future," he added.

Phelps was also arrested for driving under the influence when he was 19-years-old in 2004.
