Did Crayon Pop’s ‘Unique Concept’ Help The K-Pop Group Land Japanese Debut?

Girl group Crayon Pop are planning on branching out of Korea following their success as the opening act for Lady Gaga

The "Bar Bar Bar" singers will be making their official debut in Japan in the spring of next year after getting attention for being one of the more approachable K-pop artists in the industry, according to the Japanese media outlet Nitkan Sports.

"I think our fans love us because unlike other girl groups in Korea, we not only have a unique concept and style but also feature a catchy and addictive dance routine," stated Crayon Pop member Ellin during an interview with ABC News.

Crayon Pop recently signed with the management agency Pony Canyon in Japan, which has other K-pop artists under its wing, including Jang Keun Suk, Kim Bum and B1A4, according to the website Yahoo Entertainment Singapore. Even before they were singed to an agency, Crayon Pop announced that they would be releasing their debut Japanese single in 2015 after their performance at the "2014 First Chrome Family in JAPAN Concert" that was held in Tokyo's Sinagawa Stellar Hall, according to the Korean media outlet Osen Entertainment.

Crayon Pop was able to showcase their "unique concept" for the first time in Japan with a mini-concert, which was held in Tokyo in January 2013. Tickets were reportedly sold out in under an hour, prompting their management agency Chrome Entertainment to follow up and hold another live-concert a month later.

Crayon Pop was able to promote themselves outside of Asia while touring with Lady Gaga for her "ArtRave: The Artpop Ball" tour, which took the singers to twelve different cities across North America. The idol group gained mainstream attention with the release of "Bar Bar Bar," which not only ignited the widespread popularity of the five-engine dance, but also got the group their first No. 1 ranking track on Billboard's K-pop Hot 100 chart.

The music video for "Bar Bar Bar" has gathered more than 6 million views as fans have continued to support the members and their uniqueness.

"Gaga chose Crayon Pop to work with her for arrive because they are different. We all know Gaga used to be different and opposed to the typical. SNSD and 2NE1 are just not what she wanted. If she chose SNSD/2NE1/etc then it's pointless. Not her point. Crayon pop is the only 'different' group in KPOP. That's why she picked them," commented YouTube user AlexTheSone on Crayon Pop's VEVO page.
