Mnet Releases Teaser & Initial Information For 2014 Mnet Asian Music Awards

On October 8, Mnet released a teaser for the upcoming Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA). 2014 MAMA will take place on Wednesday, December 3 at Asia World-Expo in Hong Kong. Hong Kong was also the host for MAMA in 2013.

Formerly known as the Mnet Korean Music Festival, the Mnet Asian Music Awards started in 1999, as a Korean music video award ceremony. The Mnet Korean Music Festival was groundbreaking in that it was the first award ceremony to recognize the medium of Korean music videos, with a mission along the lines of the early MTV Video Music Awards.

Since 2010, the awards have been held outside of Korea and have recognized artists in other Asian countries such as China and Japan. However, the event remains one of the premier awards for K-Pop.

MAMA has provided many exciting moments throughout the years.

Recently, MAMA has become an award show where some of the most unique performers outside of Asia come together with top K-Pop idols. 2011 MAMA delivered the rousing stage of West Coast rappers Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre, while 2012 MAMA was an award ceremony dominated by YG Entertainment.

In 2013, MAMA became a showdown for male group supremacy between INFINITE and EXO. As international audiences continue to have easier accessibility to voting, the winners are less predictable than ever.

Here are some of the highlights from 2011 to 2013 MAMA.

Nine-member Girls’ Generation during 2011 MAMA.

Big Bang at 2012 MAMA.

Lee Hi and Epik High at 2012 MAMA.

Crayon Pop with Ylvis at 2013 MAMA.

In 2013, Mnet revolutionized the event and set a precedent for Korean awards by creating English language voting without the use of Korean SNS accounts. MAMA was also live streamed through Mnet, with English language commentary throughout the program.

Voting for 2014 MAMA will open on October 27.
