Psy's 'Grade B Gangnam Style' Hallyu's Alternative?

Psy's "Gangnam Style" music video is without a doubt, fun and exciting. Psy lives up to his reputation and shows off his straight up honesty. The fun part of his new song is his sense of humor that is clearly shown throughout the music video. Psy's video brings laughter to the viewers with his body language rather than with his words. Psy's sense of humor is referred to as "Grade B" because of the unpleasant bathroom scene that is included in his music video as well as other low quality joke scenes.

In the musical aspect, Psy's "Gangnam Style" is like the continuation of the addictive part of "Macarena" before the hook. The song consists of tectonic beats with a mix of old fashioned Korean melodies.

In the aspect of dance, most points are awarded to the fact that the horse riding dance must be done in a group. Any number of people could gather together to perform this number. This choreography will get the younger generation excited and eager to dance along. It is clearly apparent on YouTube where countless dance covers have been uploaded.

Psy's "Gangnam Style" has a deeper context than it may first appear to have. The song is about the city of Gangnam and its culture. The song keeps repeating "Gangnam Style" which seems to emphasize the actual style of Gangnam, but in reality, the song has nothing to do with it. Psy was born and raised in Gangnam, which is probably the reason he titled it "Gangnam Style." Instead of exemplifying the actual style of Gangnam, Psy is mocking it.

Even when Psy is clearly not representing the style of Gangnam, he is emphasizing his style as "Gangnam Style." The reason he is so persistent in claiming that he is "Gangnam Style" is simply portraying the nature of every man who believe that confidence is everything. The choreography as well as the image created by Psy in "Gangnam Style" has sexual content underlying the very apparent comedic dance moves.

How much of Psy's message will be understood by foreign viewers?

The reason Psy's "Gangnam Style" became so famous is not because foreign viewers felt a connection to the music itself but because of the comedic dance moves and the repetitive beats that have been continuously popular ever since electronic music became more recognized. Although a lot of news sources are claiming that foreigners are beginning to understand and feel a connection to K-Pop, it is not completely correct. It is especially incorrect to say that Psy's "Gangnam Style" is the representative model of all K-Pop. Content like this tend to have a tendency to receive explosive popularity and then die out quickly after.

An important factor is CNN's coverage of "Gangnam Style." Since CNN is a widely accepted as the most trustworthy news source in the United States, the personal introduction by a CNN reporter played a crucial role in the fame of the song.

The success of Hallyu is not only based on creative content but the cultural similarities that could be understood and accepted by different nations. Korea does not have a global digital media platform like YouTube in the United States. Korea still has a long way to go before it'll have the power to influence the continent of Asia, let alone the whole world.

The only way of promoting K-Pop is through YouTube. Hallyu needs to take advantage of the strategy of YouTube. There is no need for Koreans to cheer for Psy's "Gangnam Style" as they would cheer for an athlete participating in the Olympics unless you bought a share of Psy's stocks. In the end, Psy will probably end up focusing more intensely on the Korean market rather than on those overses.
