Girls’ Generation Tops Japan’s Oricon Music Chart Again With ‘The Best’ Despite Jessica’s Departure

K-pop group Girls' Generation released their compilation album "The Best" in Japan in mid-September and set the record as the first girl group to top the Oricon Music Chart for two consecutive weeks.

Despite the drama that surrounded Girls' Generation after member Jessica Jung was reportedly asked to leave the group, the remaining eight members have continued with their promotions and have made musical advances by ranking No. 1 on the Oricon Album Daily Chart once again, according to the media outlet Osen Entertainment.

Girls' Generation reportedly sold 8,397 copies of their latest album, "The Best," in just one day, which contributed to their comeback on Japan's music chart.

Aside from their return to the music charts, Girls' Generation attended a fan meeting in Shenzhen, China the day that news broke regarding Jessica's departure, but the event was met with tears from the remaining girls, according to the publication Asia One.

"From the start, we've only wanted to protect Girls' Generation. We're sorry. Please believe in us one more time," stated the group's leader Taeyeon

Although Jessica is no longer a part of team, her presence has yet to fully leave the group, evident from Girls' Generation's most recent music video, "Divine," which is one of tracks from "The Best." The music video for the track was the 25-year-old's final appearance with the group, according to the website PopDust.

"'We are always one' sounds so fake to me now," commented YouTube user Math Butera in response to the ballad's lyrics.

Upon Jessica's exit, there was speculation that obligations to her fashion company, BLANC, was getting in the way of her activities for Girls' Generation. Rumors of her alleged marriage plans to American-Korean finance and entertainment mogul Tyler Kwon had reportedly circulated as well.

Jessica set the record straight by releasing her own statement through her fashion company, stating that she was asked to leave Girls' Generation "without any justifiable reason," according to Allkpop.

Girls' Generation fans are now unsure of how the direction of the group will change.

"It will be interesting to see how successful they are once they start releasing music as eight members. I personally think they have lost something irreplaceable and special (and I'm not just asking about Jessica). This group always had something special about them and I now feel there be a tinge of sadness every time I see them whether it be the original 9 (from the past) or as 8," wrote social media user BunnyMECH.
