Elizabeth Pena passed away this past Tuesday at the age of 55. According to BBC, Pena died of natural causes following a brief illness. Most recently, Pena appeared on the TV show "Modern Family" as the mother of a character played by Sofia Vergara. However, the Cuban-American actress played many roles on both big and small screens, including roles in "La Bamba," "The Incredibles," "Down and Out in Beverly Hills," and "Rush Hour."

CNN reports that Pena also tried her hand at directing, and became the fourth Latina member of the Director's Guild of America when she joined. She also won an Independent Spirit Award for her role in murder mystery "Lone Star" alongside Matthew McConaughey and Chris Cooper. She also won four American Latino Media Arts (Alma) Awards during her career, and often spoke out about the limited roles for Latin American actors.

Many of Pena's friends were shocked at her death. Lou Diamond Phillips, who starred in "La Bamba," stated, "I am stunned and heartbroken, just found out about the passing of my friend Elizabeth Pena. She was such a life force, it's hard to believe... Elizabeth was not only an amazing actress; she was one of the most vibrant, wonderful people I have ever known. My prayers to her family," conveying his shock and dismay.

Modern Family co-star Jesse Tyler Ferguson stated, "The entire cast and crew are very sad to say goodbye to one of our Modern Family members. RIP to the beautiful and talented #ElizabethPena."

Will and Grace actress Debra Messing commented, "A ferociously funny, fierce and singular actress. A beautiful woman who has gone way too soon... I miss you already - RIP," and Ugly Betty star America Ferrera stated, "Heartbroken to hear the news of Elizabeth Pena's death. She was such a light. So glad I knew her. So sad she's gone." Eva Longoria also tweeted, "Rest in Peace Elizabeth Pena...you paved the way for so many of us!!"

Pena is survived by her mother, sister, husband, and her two children.
