Psy Syndrome, Why is It Being Belittled Domestically?

"Gangnam Style" Singer Psy is galloping around the world on his horse. Not literally but figuratively, he's been conquering ever social media network and gathering fans worldwide with his new single.

He has been #1 on the main music charts in Korea for a month. This is incredibly rare for singers nowadays where even the most popular idol groups can't manage to hang on to the #1 spot for more than a few days at a time.

He has been famous for his concerts but his recent one that was held on the 11th drew 30,000 fans to his 'Summer Stand' and any variety program he appeared on experienced boosts in ratings as a result.

So it's not an exaggeration to say that this is a 'Psy Syndrome' and people are noticing internationally. He is flying out today to meet Justin Bieber, who has shown interest in Psy and his recent song, "Gangnam Style."

His music video for "Gangnam Style" has now surpassed 30,000,000 views on YouTube, which is an incredible record for any singer in any country. The video has been parodied hundreds of times and other videos that are dedicated to him or the song are flooding YouTube as we speak.

International media outlets like CNN, LA Times, WSJ and the Huffington Post have all shown interest in him, done articles on him and even attended his recent concert. This is an unprecedented response from international media outlets for a Korean singer.

However, there is one stage where Psy is facing a hard time and that's at home in Korea on programs like 'Music Bank.' For some reason, he's never awarded the #1 spot and no one knows why. This has happened more than once and audiences are wondering what the criteria are for judging who would be given the #1 prize on these programs.

When interviewed about this, YG Entertainment CEO Yang Hyun Suk said, "I don't even want to know what the criteria are." This is an apt response from the man who has always been against the ranking portion of the music programs on Korean television.

"So what if Psy can't win on these stages," he said, "I would prefer that my singers stay #1 on the main music charts for 10 days rather than be awarded the #1 prize for 10 weeks on TV program. The charts are a much more accurate way of measuring what people are listening to and we try our best to listen to our fans and respond in kind."
