2NE1's 'I Am The Best' Receives U.S. Radio Airplay Before CL's Solo Debut

After the announcement of CL's solo debut in America, 2NE1's momentum appears to be building stateside by receiving airplay on US radio stations.

On October 20, Billboard reported that radio stations in New York and Boston have begun playing 2NE1's "I Am the Best" after the track received global attention by being used in a Microsoft Surface Pro 3 tablet laptop commercial.

In the week ending October 19, the anthemic 2NE1 single was reportedly 24 times on WBMP New York and 14 times on WODS Boston. In addition, "I Am the Best" recently topped Billboard's World Digital Songs chart and reached 100 million views on YouTube.

"America is so behind in giving attention to music other than English," commented Mjnia on Billboard. "I'm glad 2NE1 is gaining attention and I'm hoping for more success for them and CL."

On October 15, Star News reported that Lee Chaerin a.k.a. CL of 2NE1 will be advancing into the US market next Spring with a single release. The news has ignited excitement and curiosity amongst 2NE1 fans.

"Great, but what happened to 2NE1's debut?" commented xxlolixx on allkpop.

In 2010, record label YG Entertainment documented 2NE1's recording sessions with Black Eyed Peas founder will.i.am, presumably for their American debut. The group then released a number of English collaborations with the producer, including "Take the World On" and "Gettin' Dumb."

Since then, however, the group has said "there are no official plans to crossover" as of last year. But some Blackjacks believe CL's debut could in fact be the lead-in for the group's official entry into the US market.

Sadly, it hasn't all been good news for 2NE1, as the group recently endured rumors of disbandment after CL's solo announcement.

"There are no issues with 2NE1's activities," said YG Entertainment on October 17. "They are currently staying in Macau due to their previously arranged group activities. They will make a good album and come back as 2NE1."
