Russell Brand Admits He’s ‘Open Minded’ About 9/11 Conspiracy Theories, British Host Says U.S. Government Might Have Been Behind Terrorist Attack

Russell Brand is no stranger to controversy.

The 39-year-old British radio host may have stirred up a little backlash when he urged people to stay "open minded" about 9/11 conspiracy theories during an interview with BBC's "Newsnight."

"I think it is interesting at this time when we have so little trust in our political figures, where ordinary people have so little trust in their media, we have to remain open-minded to any kind of possibility," Brand told host Evan Davis when asked about his views on conspiracy theories surrounding the Twin Tower and Pentagon attacks on 9/11.

In his new book "Revolution," Brand suggests that the September 11 terrorist attack may have been "controlled."

In the BBC interview, Davis pressed him on the matter, asking Brand to clarify his opinion.

"Do you trust the American government? Do you trust the British government? What I do think is very interesting is the relationship that the Bush family have had for a long time with the bin Laden family," said Brand.

The British author then drew a comparison between the anti-Islamic sentiments that resulted after 9/11 with the way in which the media has covered the recent fatal shooting of a soldier in Ottawa, Canada, by a man the news continually deems "an Islamic convert."

"What I do think is very interesting is the way then even the BBC report the events in Ottawa to subtly build an anti-Islamic narrative. I think that's very interesting," said Brand.

As Davis pushed further however, trying to dig deeper into Brand's political viewpoints, the radio host refused to be backed into a corner.

"Mate, I don't want to follow you down blind alleys about silly administrative quibbles," said Brand.

The BBC later defended inviting Brand to be on "Newsnight" after receiving criticism from viewers.

The media outlet released the following statement:

"Love him or loathe him Russell Brand has been one of the most eloquent voices articulating the anti-politics mood that all British politicians are currently struggling to engage with."
