Chrissy Teigen Twitter Death Threats: Model Swears Off Social Media Platform, Husband John Legend Vows To Block Trolls In Face Of Vicious Backlash To Canada Shooting Tweet

It looks like Chrissy Teigen has given up Twitter for good. The model, who has a history of using the platform to express sometimes controversial opinions, faced an onslaught of hateful and violent personal attacks after tweeting a comment about gun violence in America – following a mass shooting that took place in Canada on Wednesday. Then on Thursday, after the obscenities hadn’t let up, Teigen bid farewell to Twitter, saying she would be using Instagram instead from now on.  Her Husband John Legend meanwhile, vowed to block anyone who tweets the Teigen hate in his direction.

In the original tweet in question, Teigen, wrote, “Active shooting in Canada, or as we call it in America, Wednesday.” She followed by clarifying, “That’s not a joke. It is a fact.” After some tweeters accused the model of making light of the tragedy, Teigan responded, “Sorry you don’t understand that is a knock at America and our issues with gun control. No one is minimizing the Ottowa shooting.” She later explained, “I’m not apologizing. If you take it wrong that is your fault.”

It seems the vitriol really started rolling in after that. Later in the afternoon, Teigen tweeted a screen shot of some of the nasty messages she had received. These included statements like, “ROT IN HELL BITCH,” “U F*CKING C**T. YOU’LL GET URS SOON ENOUGH,” and “Sorry Canada. Our Hollywood elites & it’s dumb models are idiots. Wish ISIS would give Chrissy a permanent haircut.” Along with the shot of these tweets, Teigan included her own comment: “And this is where @twitter needs to step their came up.”

The next morning, Teigan began the day by checking in on the situation, tweeting cautiously, “*peeks* hi mentions, are you safe yet.”  When it turned out the attacks were still coming strong, Teigan mused, “It’s gotten to the point people don’t even see the simplicity of the original tweet and have just wanted to get shaking-mad over something.”

The situation became more terrifying as the tweets got increasingly violent. As people continued threatening the lives of both Teigen and Legend, the model eventually threw up her hands, writing, “I feel sick. Bye Twitter. Taking my talents to Instagram.” Legend, for his part, simply wrote, “The easiest way to get blocked is tweeting me some misogynist sh*t about my wife. #bye.”
