What happened on "Boardwalk Empire" last week?

On "Friendless Child," last Sunday's penultimate episode, "Nucky's war with Luciano draws in Willie and Eli as Nucky tries to maintain his control in Atlantic City. Meanwhile, Maranzano's tenure as boss is nearing the end; Gillian sends a letter from the hospital; and in 1897, a young Nucky quarrels with Mabel about a runaway from Trenton and does a favor for the Commodore."

What should we look forward to for tonight's final episode (S05E08)? Warning: series finale spoilers ahead!

According to USA Today, which chooses the "Boardwalk Empire" series finale as one of its top picks for Sunday night, "As this series makes its TV exit, Nucky considers exiting Atlantic City for the bright lights of New York. No doubt fans hoped for a longer run, but they can at least be pleased HBO gave the creators a chance to bring the show to an actual conclusion." Mercury News adds, "We can only imagine what the body count will be when this bloody period drama ends its distinguished run tonight. Will Nucky (Steve Buscemi) survive the all-out war he's been waging?"

Care for some more S05E08 season finale spoilers?

"Rather than blow off excess steam and merely deliver a body count, the writing and acting in season 5's episodes have surpassed "Boardwalk Empire's" usual high standards, offering a pitch-perfect conclusion to a story that is surprisingly human in a world that's been intentionally strewn with subhuman behavior. That's not to say that "Boardwalk Empire" looks as if it intends to end on a sappy note; it's also had plenty of what both the casual and devoted viewer expect: Lots of people have been shot in the head, the neck, the chest. So long, then, to Nelson Van Alden/George Mueller (Michael Shannon), Chalky White (Michael Kenneth Williams), Mickey Doyle (Paul Sparks) and Sally Wheet (Patricia Arquette). It goes without saying that "Boardwalk Empire" was a relentlessly violent show, befitting its genre. Every great story keeps a few secrets to itself. In a season of spilling truth along with the blood, "Boardwalk Empire" has filled in many of its blanks, but not all of them. It would be fitting, somehow, if this show that deserved many more viewers and much more attention would creep away quietly - even ambiguously - leaving us wanting that little bit more that we'll never get," explains TV Critic Hank Stuever at the Washington Post.

It will certainly be interesting to see this finale play out! Check out the "Eldorado" (S05E08) promo video here:
