Psy-Tablo-Kang Ho Dong, Reasons for Signing with Big Management

Celebrities who have experienced traumatic events because of certain controversies have chosen big management companies for their return.

Kang Ho Dong, who had recently faced charges about not paying enough on his tax returns, announced that he will be signing with SM C&C, a subsidiary of SM Entertainment, this past Friday. After a year's hiatus, he is announcing his official return to broadcast.

For Psy, who had been involved in a controversy about his performance in the military and had to re-enter, decided to sign with YG Entertainment in 2010.

Tablo, who had been questioned about the authenticity of his Stanford education, chose also to sign with YG and continued his activities with them.

Regarding these types of actions, industry insiders say, "After going through a hard time with their own troubles, they probably felt the need for a stable fence to protect them."

In interviews, Psy agreed saying, "When I was back in the military, I felt the need for some kind of protection until I could really come back full force once more and I opted for that from Yang Hyun Suk."

Epik High's Tablo chose YG at the suggestion of his wife Kang Hye Jung and YG recently decided to take on the other members of Epik High as well. They plan on releasing their new album next month under the new management label.

One record label company representative said, "The amount of influence that the three big management companies - SM, YG and JYP - have is immense. Artists feel that despite taking a smaller percentage for their own profits, they want the security of a large management company with a lot of influence, which would ensure a smoother ride."

Other insiders said that the big managemet companies have a much more detailed, tested and proven system that may be attractive to celebrities.

The big management companies have everything from content creation to broadcast management, to marketing and promotional powers. Within this system, the celebrities are better able to focus on their own work, whether it be music, acting or being an MC.

A representative from Kang Ho Dong said, "He wants to focus on his job as an MC within the well-developed system of SM. SM C&C, which develops new content and actually creates new programs for broadcasting stations, was an incredibly attractive option for him and his investment in the company followed naturally."

A YG insider said, "Psy and Tablo can now just focus on their music with YG in the background. One of the reasons that 'Gangnam Style' was able to be so successful was because YG is already an expert in how to spread the word on the media routes like YouTube, Facebook and iTunes."

The big management companies are also hard at work to take in the bigger names. The two companies' stocks hit a high when they announced news about Kang Ho Dong or Psy's "Gangnam Style."

However, there are voices that say these kinds of movements on the parts of celebrities into bigger management will only fuel the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer phenomenon.

With the immense growth of the big management companies, this leaves little room for the other smaller management companies that really depend on a few big names in their companies. This would also make room for monopolization of the limited amount of performance space and airtime for those with smaller management companies.

Some insiders say that this kind of trend will lead to the disintegration of the smaller companies, with only the 3 big names left in the end.
