Communication with Fans? Stars Become Uncomfortable with Social Networking Sites

With the introduction of twitter and other social platforms, celebrities were able to communicate faster with their fans without having to wait for an official announcement in the newspaper. Now, these social platforms have become the main source of communication between stars and fans. However, this way of communicating has also stirred up misunderstandings as well.

On August 16, singer and actress Jun Hye Bin posted on her twitter, "The Haha that I rejected a long time ago is now going to be Byul's husband?" which caused a lot of criticism online. Fans thought this message was going too "overboard" and that it wasn't necessary to post things like this. Jun Hye Bin had posted this as a way to congratulate the two, however, it was taken the wrong way by fans. Jun Hye Bin immediately apologized afterwards. Byul commented back, "Well since you rejected him, I now have this great guy by my side. I know you wrote it like that just for laughs. Don't worry about it. If you are still worried, give us some more money on our wedding day." Haha also wrote back, "What is going on? This is all a joke guys. We are all so free."

On the same day, singer Shim Eun Jin was criticized as she wrote about her disappointment in how the police dealt with her car accident. Fans wrote comments such as, "Do you expect to receive some sort of celebrity treatment" and other criticisms. The police official Facebook page even posted a message saying, "Their was a misunderstanding that the driver had connections with the police, but the investigation was fair."

These misunderstandings through twitter and other social networks have been happening a lot recently. One entertainment official commented, "Stars are now scared to post anything online in fear that they might get criticized. However, since it is the hottest trend right now, they can't fully ignore it either. That is why our entertainment company checks our artist's tweets. We're trying to use these platforms as more of a way to advertise rather than to communicate to our fans."

Another official stated, "Honestly, misunderstandings happen all the time when talking in person with someone. Imagine how much more misunderstandings would occur through a twitter message. If one were to use these platforms in the right way, it would be such an asset to these celebrities. However, it is unfortunate that these sites have gained more negative feed back these days." There should be a way for these social networking sites to become a more positive way for fans and stars to communicate.
