K-Pop Crossover: Korean-American YouTube Rapper Official Gemini Covers Hallyu Hits From Big Bang To BEAST [EXCLUSIVE]

Korean-American rapper Official Gemini has made YouTube his main creative outlet and covering K-pop artists his trademark.

The San Diego-based artist, real name Paul Jeong, grew up listening to hip-hop legends like Tupac Shakur, The Notorious B.I.G., the Wu-Tang Clan, Nas and Scarface before he decided to grab a mic and create his own music.

Past K-pop covers Official Gemini has released on YouTube include BEAST's "Black Paradise," Jay Park's "Appetizer" and "That XX," from Big Bang rapper G-Dragon.

His most recent cover of "Eyes, Nose, Lips" from G-Dragon's Big Bang bandmate Taeyang is his most successful offering to date, receving over 2,700 views since it was uploaded to the site on Sept. 17.

KpopStarz caught up with Official Gemini earlier this week, to discuss his newest offereing and to discuss why he does what he does.

"When I first heard 'Eyes, Nose, Lips' by Taeyang, I loved the lyrics and the emotion of the song, so I had to cover it," Gemini said. "I'm also a huge Big Bang fan, so that's another reason."

He also discussed why he started rapping in the first place.

"Big Bang's 'This Love' caught my attention because the original song was by Maroon 5 and hearing someone rapping in Korean on the song was amazing," Gemini said.

"But the one song that gave me the final push to actually start rapping was Drunken Tiger's 'I Want You.' I always wanted to rap but I felt that because I was Asian, no one would want to give me a listen. But as soon as I heard his music and [found out] he was also Korean, I knew that I should put the ignorance aside and pursue the thing that I loved."

Yet, he doesn't believe his ethnicity has held him back.

"Being an Asian-American artist in the US, I think of it as an advantage, being bilingual and knowing both the American and Korean culture," Gemini said. "I can make music in two perspectives, as opposed to only one."

He also took a moment to comtemplate his rhyming style.

"I'm not sure if I have a similar sound as the rappers in Korea, but my fans tell me that I remind them of Jay Park," Gemini said. "Because Jay Park didn't start off in Korea, he was born in the states. And I guess we are similar in a way, because we both have that American-Korean culture, influence and sound."

Although he listens to many Hallyu and Western hip-hop artists, the Califonia rapper also has tastes beyond that of rap.

"I not only follow hip-hop and K-pop, I actually study other genres of music," Gemini said. "I believe that [it's necessary] for an artist-musician to progress."

And beyond just reimagining the music of his heros, the K-hip-hop artist wants to help people with his YouTube offerings.

"I actually started doing music not because I loved hip-hop, but because music saved me," he said. "And to repay music, I want to do the same and help others out there with my music."
