Big Bang May End The Year As YG Entertainment's Only Group Not To Promote In 2014

Two months are left in 2014 and Big Bang is the only group currently under YG Entertainment that has yet to make a comeback.

Big Bang hasn't made a comeback as a group since 2012 with the release of their Alive album. Instead, the group has focused on solo activities and concert tours.

For the past several months, there has been the expectation that Big Bang would release a new album following YG CEO Yang Hyun Suk's initial statement that an album would be released in August. However, the group never made a comeback and if Big Bang doesn't release music in the next two months, they will be the only one of YG Entertainment's five active idol groups not making a comeback in 2014.

During 2014, the five Big Bang members pursued solo activities with several releasing their own music. Taeyang dropped his second full-length album RISE led by the critically acclaimed song "Eyes, Nose, Lips," while Daesung focused his attention on Japan where he released his D'slove album.

Aside from musical pursuits, Seungri appeared in the TV drama Angel Eyes and T.O.P starred in the film Tazza 2: The Hidden Card. The group's leader, G-Dragon, didn't release any new music, but performed in the United States at KCON 2014 and is working on music as both composer and producer for YG Entertainment's upcoming girl group said to be making their debut by the end of 2014.

On October 27, YG Entertainment once again asked "Who's Next?" implying that new music will be released on November 11. While there is a possibility that Big Bang will release something on that day, there is also the likelihood that the comeback could be from Psy or that one of YG Entertainment's new groups will release something.

Although Big Bang's Taeyang recently mentioned the group is working on something, he was unable to clarify when an album would be ready. It is likely that the year will end without an album from the five-member idol group, primarily due to their Japanese concert tour beginning on November 15 and injuries that Seungri obtained in a recent car accident.

Initial reports downplayed Seungri's injuries, but the idol ended up in the intensive care unit and has yet to return to stage. He did, however, appear at an October 18 fan meeting. It is unknown whether he will perform at Big Bang's Japanese concert tour that begins in the middle of November.

Other YG Entertainment groups, like 2NE1 and Epik High, saw major record sales and music chart successes this year. 2NE1 dropped Crush in February, while Epik High's Shoebox has been atop the charts since its release last week.

2014 also saw the debuts of both Akdong Musician (AKMU) and WINNER who brought new styles of music to YG Entertainment. AKMU's lead single "200%" was well received and the group has been nominated for numerous year-end awards. Similarly, WINNER's debut song "Empty" won numerous awards, and the group is also nominated for several rookie awards.

Lee Hi and Psy, the only two solo artists currently active at YG Entertainment, have not made formal album comebacks, but Psy released "Hangover," a collaboration with Snoop Dogg, and Lee Hi is rumored to be making a comeback soon.

YG Entertainment is also scheduled to release two new idol groups: Pink Punk before the year is through and iKON to kickstart 2015.
