Amanda Bynes 2014 [UPDATE]: Twitter Meltdown, Massive Dent In Net Worth And Arrest Lead Parents To Regain Conservatorship

Amanda Bynes has been on a rapid downward spiral for the last couple months, and it looks like her parents are finally taking control of the situation. They have reportedly gained conservatorship over the troubled actress, who was hospitalized under a psychiatric hold earlier this month. The first sign that Bynes was in trouble once again came when she was arrested for DUI in September. Since then, she has been spotted behaving erratically in public, gone on characteristically concerning Twitter rants, and apparently been engaging in out-of-control spending sprees.

Gossip Cop reports that one of Bynes’ parents’ main motivations for reinstating their conservatorship – which previously expired over the summer – was the alarming rate at which she was burning through money. It seems the actress has dwindled her once massive net worth down to $5.7 million, of which $2.8 million is in real estate. The only income Bynes made last year was $144,786 from renting one of her homes, but that hasn’t caused her to slow down her enormous spending sprees. TMZ reports that she was buying expensive luxury goods, like Cartier jewelry, and then giving them away to complete strangers on the street.

As previously reported, after Bynes’ arrest, news surfaced that she had been expelled from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandise for substance abuse, poor attendance and cheating. The situation went from bad to worse as the actress reportedly exhibited troubling behavior, such as talking to herself and wandering aimlessly around stores for hours, on a trip to New York. The tipping point came when Bynes tweeted an accusation that her father had sexually, physically and verbally abused her as a child, before recanting later that day. She was then involuntarily hospitalized, and she remains under psychiatric hold at this time, reportedly for at least another month.
