Review: Why Gogoboys New Single 'Suddenly Romance' Has Everything You Could Want In A Korean Indie Song [VIDEO]

South Korean indie-rockers Gogoboys have returned with their second full-length studio album entitled, "Happy."

The leadoff single "Suddenly Romance," released on Oct. 14 on ModernBoy Records, has become a playlist favorite of mine this month.

"Suddenly Romance" has everything one could want from a non-mainstream Korean song. It has a mellow-but-steady upbeat pace to the melody and even a music video which isn't all flash and glam, but instead, feels honest.

The four members of Gogoboys, vocalist Lee Seung Yun, guitarist Hwangseongha, bassist Guys and drummer Joyongchan nail the song from start to finish without any awkward moments. They seem to have a very surf rock style of singing and playing, which adds to the mellow and laid-back feel of "Suddenly Romance." Much of Gogoboys's music seems to follow this pattern and their consistency is most likely playing a large part in increasing their fan base.

"Suddenly Romance" starts off with the guitar and drums in a sort of high energy, the-night-is-just-starting kind of way.

This is even more pronounced with the music video's imagery of street lights and a scenic nighttime drive. You know that it's late, because the song seems to be from the perspective of a male, who you never see fully, only his feet and hands. But at a point he glances at his phone and the time is just before 2 a.m.

Around this point, the vocals seem to grow stronger, perhaps another member has joined in.

And we see the faceless man wash his hands, get dressed and get ready to go out. All of this, although very normal and seemingly uneventful, is made interesting by the vintage film style of the video.

All any band needs is a good beat and singing that blends with it well, and Gogoboys have that here. They were also smart in taking the story of the song outside, in the real world in the video for "Suddenly Romance." The audience can relate more to this and in a way, makes Korea seem like it's more than just a place overtaken by the Hallyu Wave.

This vision of South Korea is one that might not be a mirror of the cities we've lived in (or even the images we've seen of the location in the past), but still seems faintly familiar, almost like something out of a dream.

With the simplicity of the vocals and the restrained playing of the musicians in Gogoboys, we are able to truly enjoy what is an elegantly crafted pop song.

"Suddenly Romance" is not an overwhelming sensory blast packed into a few short minutes.

But the end of this four-minute track, one could easily find themselves humming along, expecially if they're driving the city streets in the twilight hours.
