‘Interstellar’ Movie Soundtrack Composer Hans Zimmer Talks ‘Mysterious Letter’ From Director Christopher Nolan And Announces Collaboration With Junkie XL For ‘Batman Vs. Superman’

The way a movie sounds often directly influences the mood of the images the audience sees. Additionally, certain musical themes from films have become so famous that a movie can be quickly identified once the theme begins.

One man who has been responsible for quite a few movie scores over the past decade, including most of Christopher Nolan's films, is composer Hans Zimmer. The composer recently opened up to an audience at The Hollywood Masters event about writing the music of Nolan's space epic "Interstellar" including how he wrote a four minute piece with only a mysterious letter to go on, and how he deflected his conflict of interest with "Batman vs. Superman" soundtrack by collaborating with Junkie XL.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hans Zimmer agreed to write a piece of music based on a mysterious one page letter from Christopher Nolan.

"So he gives me this letter and let me be very specific about this. It's very thick paper, not typed on a computer but properly typed on a typewriter. The thick paper meant I knew there was no carbon copy," explained Zimmer. "Really the letter was a fable that gave nothing away -- This story, this fable, these bits of dialogue he wrote for me were full of personal information that he has about myself and my children."

The mysterious letter was apparently enough for Zimmer to be inspired to compose a 4-minute piece of music with piano and organ. After meeting with the "Inception" director to hear the music, it became clear that Zimmer's music would be a source of inspiration throughout the entire process of making "Interstellar." Zimmer admits that it was his nine year working relationship with Nolan that allowed him to create such a heartfelt piece of music.

But that nine years spent on Nolan's version of "Batman," presented a problem when Zimmer was asked to write the music for "Batman vs Superman." The composer was worried that his previous work would influence the sound of "Batman" too much and not reflect the new adaptation of the caped night crusader. As a result, Zimmer decided to enlist the help of a collaborator to take over the "Batman" portions of the upcoming DC comics film.

"I have agonized over it. I agonized over it, so much so that finally, I went, I don't want to betray what Chris, James Newton Howard and I did. And so I asked Zack [Snyder] if it would be OK if I called a friend in," explained Zimmer (via First Showing). "And I'm going to be working with Junkie XL, who really is a great friend. He just finished the 'Mad Max' score. I said to him, 'You take care of Batman. I'll do the other guy.' And Zack loved that idea. It's a way out."

Based on Hans Zimmer's continued endorsement from award winning directors like Christopher Nolan, perhaps the composer is on the fast track to another Academy Award nomination for his work on the "Interstellar" movie soundtrack. Fans can check out his composition when the movie premieres this week on November 7.
