K-Pop Review: 7th Album - Only One by BoA

On July 25, BoA made her highly anticipated comeback after a 2 year hiatus, with her 7th album, "Only One."

Only One

Before the release of the album SM Entertainment revealed that this song was composed by BoA herself. "Only One" is an incredible song from start to finish. We still get to see the incredibly powerful dancer we've always known BoA to be but we've also been introduced to this new softer, soulful BoA, and I love it. My favorite part of the concept of this video was that she has this subtle sex appeal that comes from her choreography and her voice even though the song is about breaking up.

The Shadow

This song is the most like what we've seen, and heard from BoA until now, it even reminds me a bit of "Copy & Paste." I've read a few negative reviews of this song, but I can't agree that this song is bad, it's just not...original. "The Shadow" definitely features her standard dance pop sound, as well as her strong dance choreography.

Wrap Up

Despite having had a hands on role with this album BoA wasn't able to fully escape the hands of SM. As much as BoA has shown growth through her promotion of "Only One," I cannot say the same for her album as a whole. After listening to "Only One" I was expecting great things from the other songs, but I have to say I was a bit disappointed. Other than "The Shadow," and maybe " One Dream" nothing was really memorable about this album, a classic characteristic of an album produced by SM.

BoA hasn't become one of K-Pop's reigning Queens by accident. This woman has shown serious dedication to what she does, and "Only One" shows not her ability to reinvent herself, and to go against the grain and still come out on top, but also it shows fans she isn't a puppet for her agency, but has skills behind the scenes as well.
