Review: Hello Venus Strike A Devilish Pose With Their Sexy New Single 'Sticky Sticky' [VIDEO]

Sometime around the late 1990s, rap music in the US went pop.

Where R&B had come to signify over-produced power ballads, groundbreaking artists from Mary J. Blige to Lauryn Hill showed the world that head-bopping beats easily trump vocal pyrotechnics.

It is exciting to see a similar trend happening right now in K-pop.

While acts like 4Minute or B.A.P have been blending hip-hop with a more traditional Hallyu sound for the last several years, the movement seems to be gaining some serious steam.

The newest single to bring the big beat to K-pop is the song "Sticky Sticky," released on Friday, by the six-piece South Korean girl group Hello Venus.

Though best known for pure pop hits like their 2013 smash "Do You Want Some Tea," on "Sticky Sticky," Hello Venus throw caution to the wind, producing a song that would be right at home on the turntables at a hip-hop house party.

With the help of K-pop's most gifted producer, Brave Brothers, the girls throw their adorable image aside, in favor of a vibe and a lyrical narrative that is distinctly more adult.

With a strong nod to Britney Spears, Hello Venus deliver vocals that sizzle with sexuality over a beat that is nearly impossible to avoid moving your body to.

This is not music for teenyboppers.

By trimming down their sound to tastefully refined melodies over this raw hip-hop groove, Hello Venus have reinvented themselves with a sound that feels just right for the present time.

South Korean rappers, many of them toiling in virtual obscurity, have been producing tracks with as much fire and funk as anything in the West, for decades. It is an exciting turn of events to see more mainstream artists catching up.
