Single Review: HI SUHYUN Conjure Late '60s Soul With Help From iKON's Bobby On 'I'm Different' [AUDIO]

YG Entertainment’s newest sub-unit HI SUHYUN brilliantly channel the vinyl-tinged sound of sixties American soul on “I’m Different.” HI SUHYUN benefits from the unique tonality of Lee Hi’s voice combined with the rich range of Lee Soohyun of Akdong Musician (AKMU). Bobby, from the male group iKON, is featured as rapper on “I’m Different.” Bobby’s appearance on the track helps to make the song sound less retro and more contemporary.

The single was marketed through a sugary sweet visual campaign depicting Lee Hi, Soohyun, and Bobby. While HI SUHYUN is billed as a teen subunit, the maturity of the vocals demonstrated on the song extend past bubblegum pop.

On “I’m Different,” YG Entertainment demonstrates the potential that lies within some of the youngest artists at the agency. The common thread that lies with Lee Soohyun, Lee Hi, and Bobby is that they have each held their own against older opponents on music competition programs.

Lee Hi was the first runner up for the first season of “KPop Star,” while Lee Soohyun was the winner of the second season with her brother, as part of Akdong Musician.

Bobby competed on “WIN: Who Is Next?” but was defeated as part of Team B. He went on to compete on the hip-hop competition show “Show Me The Money 3” and emerged as the champion. Bobby is also a featured rapper on the Epik High hit song “Born Hater.”

With their sixties throwback sound, HI SUHYUN joins groups like Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, as well as Zooey Deschanel's She & Him. In the Korean music scene, indie artists The Barberettes have established themselves as sixties vocal revivalists.

"I'm Different" is so unique, it would be excellent to hear an entire album from HI SUHYUN.
