Popularity of Psy's 'Gangnam Style' Analyzed Realistically

Currently, Psy's music video for "Gangnam Style" has received over 90 million views on YouTube. Statistics from YouTube reveal that the music video has been viewed by people from all over the globe. Yesterday, "Gangnam Style" easily passed 89 million views and surpassed the record of Girls' Generation's (SNSD) music video of "Gee." Psy's "Gangnam Style" has officially become the most famous K-Pop hit song in the history of K-Pop.

From countless different nations around the world, parodies of "Gangnam Style" is continuously being uploaded and global stars like Britney Spears and Katy Perry have expressed their interest in Psy.

Psy even travelled to the United States recently to meet with the representatives of Justine Bieber for a discussion of a collaboration project. If Psy were to debut in the United States, how will the people respond? By interviewing people in New York, the popularity of "Gangnam Style" was analyzed.

Unbelievable Online Popularity

On the 29th of last month, when tourists in New York were asked about "Gangnam Style" majority of people answered with "I don't know." The responses from most American males in their 20s were similar. However, when they were shown with the actual music video of "Gangnam Style," most of the people stated that they have seen the video somewhere on the internet. Also, males in their 40s from France stated they don't know "Gangnam Style" or other specific K-Pop artists but are aware of the rising popularity of K-Pop

At the site of JYJ Junsu's first solo world tour however, the heat of K-Pop wave was unbelievable. Some even wore T-shirts with "Gangnam Style" written on them. A Canadian fan named Kate explained, "Psy's 'Gangnam Style' is the hottest song among the K-Pop fans."

There is a big difference in the popularity of K-Pop and the popularity of Psy's "Gangnam Style." A second generation Korean explained, "Psy's 'Gangnam Style' is popular among people who are interested in K-Pop and people who take a lot of interest in internet contents. People who don't really stay up-to-date with the current hot topics in the internet are not aware of 'Gangnam Style'. Regardless, whenever I show the music video to my foreign friends, they all respond with comments like 'It's so funny' and 'It's really entertaining.'"

The Responses

Even when the hype about Psy is analyzed realistically, the responses from agencies in the United States as well as the people are very positive. Psy is going down the usual track of the successful trend setters by receiving an incredible love and support from majority of the population as well as receiving interest from entertainment agencies.

On an episode of HLN's morning program "Morning Express" featured the "Duck Version" of Psy's "Gangnam Style." The video showed a group of college students dancing to "Gangnam Style" while wearing duck costumes. The host of "Morning Express" commented, "This is one of the most popular parody videos of 'Gangnam Style' in the internet" and explained that there were other versions like "Pony Style" and "Pyongyang Style".

Jerry Slaughter, the globally famous dancer who have prior experience working with Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin, revealed that he knew of Psy's "Gangnam Style." When Jerry Slaughter was asked if he ever saw a music video for "Gangnam Style", he burst out laughing and stated, "Of course, I watched it. It is really popular here" and showed interest. Regarding Psy's horse riding dance, Jerry Slaughter continued, "The music video is not too serious and did a good job expressing the have-fun mentality. It is a very good content because it brings joy and laughter to people."
