Review: Why We Won't Turn Down GD X Taeyang's 'Good Boy' For Anything [VIDEO]

At midnight on November 21 (KST), YG Entertainment released “Good Boy,” the first single from hip-hop sub-unit GD X Taeyang. “Good Boy” is an electronic dance music hip-hop track, that has an epic drop prior to the leading vocals from G-Dragon.

“Good Boy” is a hot song from the starting beat, benefitting from a beat structure that resembles the DJ Snake and Lil Jon hit “Turn Down for What.” “Good Boy” merges G-Dragon’s rap flow with the vocal talent of Taeyang, creating a song that needs to be listened to repeatedly.

The teaser images and video hinted at the fact that “Good Boy” could be a dance track but this isn’t another “Ringa Linga.” While “Ringa Linga” incorporated the aspects that have made EDM artists like Skrillex popular, “Good Boy” is a straight up club banger.

G-Dragon introduces the track as a party anthem, with the phrase "put your hands in the air, how you feelin' out there, we gonna party up in here."  At the 1:35 mark, the song hits another drop which would be unusual for most K-Pop songs but works for "Good Boy." The refrain "I am a good boy" is chanted throughout the chorus which then builds. At the 3:35 mark of the song, Taeyang and G-Dragon's voices build to a harmonious crescendo.

The video incorporates classic aspects of K-Pop videos including black light treatment and clothing that features a “hip-hop” style. Scenes featuring G-Dragon and Taeyang driving with the top down, while leaning harken to West Coast hip-hop. But the best thing about the song and video is that it isn’t trying too hard to be considered rap unlike Zico’s release “Tough Cookie.”

Turn up the bass on your stereo and listen to “Good Boy” on blast.
