Sam Smith Hits Back At Rumors That He Doesn’t Want To Be A Spokesperson For The Gay Community

Don't tell Sam Smith he can't be your spokesperson!

The 22-year-old British singer, who is openly gay, recently sat down for an interview on "The Ellen Show" and discussed rumors that he doesn't want to be a spokesperson for the gay community. The "Stay With Me" crooner had a few serious things to say on the subject.

"I'm a singer and a songwriter. I get upset sometimes because I don't talk about it too much," Smith told Ellen DeGeneres on Monday's show (via E! News.) "People say, 'he doesn't want to be a spokesperson for the gay community.' I do, of course I do."

"I want to be a spokesperson for everyone," added Smith. "Ya know, straight people, gay people, bisexual. I don't want to be limited."

Smith also talked about coming out as gay to the public before his first album was released, a move that some deemed an extremely risky career move.

"I wanted to do it before because if I did it afterwards, people probably would have thought I was lying just to sell records," explained the "I'm Not The Only One" singer.

The process of announcing his sexuality was somewhat foreign to Smith, who told DeGeneres that his supportive mother learned that he was gay at a very early age.

"It didn't feel like a coming out. I came out when I was like four years old," joked Smith. "My mom said she knew when I was like three. So I didn't have to actually properly come out."

The young singer may have the voice of an old-soul but when it comes to navigating his personal life as well as his critically acclaimed music career, Smith admitted that he considers himself in a learning phase.

"I'm 22 as well," said Smith. "I'm still trying to figure everything out."
