Hip-hop can often be at its best, when a bunch of rappers get together to add a diverse assemblage of styles and sounds. Throw a couple vocalists in there and you've just opened up a huge amount of possibilities that a large ensemble can bring.

The most obvious example of this idea in play is, of course, Wu-Tang Clan, but from Public Enemy's legendary live show to Boot Camp Clik's eight rap geniuses, some of hip-hop's biggest bands ever have literally been large ensembles.

Taking this concept to an almost ridiculous next level, with over a dozen artists from the BrandNew Music roster rapping or singing, songwriter-producer ASSBRASS somehow brings it all together on "Brand New Day," the new single released by the label on Friday, as part of its three-song EP entitled "Brand New Year Vol.3 New Day."

In addition to rappers Verbal Jint and San E, the track features members of PHANTOM, As One, P-Type, TAEWAN, Kang Min Hee, Kanto, Champagne & Candle, Da Il Yang and DJ IT.

With a musical backdrop that shapeshifts around each individual performer while sticking to one cohesive idea and rhythmic propulsion that gives the song its satisfying snap, "Brand New Day" is no mere novelty song or record label promotional gimmick.

Okay, sure, it could have been originally envisioned as way to hype the label.

But, ASSBRASS shows this track a lot of love (there's a sentence I never imagined typing), and each of the BrandNew Music artists puts their own distinctive stamp on it.

The reason a big ensemble can work so well is it brings out the natural competitor that even established artists always seem to still have lurking inside of them, and drives everybody to do their best.

"Brand New Day" sounds like a unified project, a band, not just a bunch of artists sharing the stage.

And with the ability of this large ensemble to bring out everyone's best, perhaps they should get this giant collection of talent on the road and in the studio together a whole lot more.
