Super Junior Siwon Criticized By Muslim Fans For Allegedly UsingThe Prophet Mohammad's Name On Social Media

Super Junior's Siwon came under fire by some international fans for using the name of the prophet Mohammad on Twitter in relation to a picture of Super Junior's Kangin.

The words "Muhammad Kangin" trended worldwide on Twitter on December 7 following outrage over Siwon sharing a picture of member Kangin with the phrase.

Comments on the picture included multiple examples of Muslim K-Pop fans outraged at Siwon's casual use of the name of Islam's most revered prophet, while other comments tried to explain that the picture showed Kangin dressed as Mohammad Ali, the great American boxer.

"Is Siwon talking about Islam?" asked Jini, an Indonesian fan who left a comment on the photo. "I hope he didn't realize this is offensive."

"Kangin looks like he's out to defend his title," wrote one Japanese fans by the name of Jina, who appeared to see the boxing reference.

The picture depicted Kangin in a maroon hoodie and navy bathrobe, similar to the robe worn by boxers around the globe.

This of course is not the first time in 2014 that the Korean entertainment industry has seen instances where Muslim fans have been quick to criticize K-Pop stars for misrepresenting Islam.

In March, CL of 2NE1’s solo song “MTBD” contained the seemingly frivolous use of verses from the Koran, which led to YG Entertainment (2NE1’s company) removing the controversial portion of the song.

November saw several incidents where K-Pop acts were accused of insensitivity towards Muslim and Arab fans. Girl group Wa$$UP apologized following the use of Islamic symbols appearing during a broadcasted performance of their song “Shut Up U.”

Singer Loco also was criticized and apologized in November for including Muslim prayer to his song “Act Serious.”

Siwon’s picture appears to be from a rehearsal for one of the three Japanese shows that Super Junior held the first week of December. Super Junior is currently in the midst of their Super Show 6 concert tour, which began on September 19 in Seoul.

SM Entertainment recently announced that Super Junior will hold two Super Show 6 concerts in Mexico in February 2015.
