3 Reasons Why GOT7 Deserves To Take Home The Hallyu Special Award At The 2015 Seoul Music Awards

The Seoul Music Awards (SMA) are on January 22, 2015 and fans worldwide are gearing up to vote for their favorite idols.

The awards show, annually presented by Sports Seoul since 1990, celebrates the achievements of various groups and individuals in the Korean music industry. This is the first year that JYP Entertainment's group GOT7 has been nominated. Impressively, they are in the running for Popularity, New Artists, Hallyu Special, and the Daesang Award. Although all the awards are exciting, especially the Daesang Award (Grand Award/Artist of the Year), GOT7 is most deserving of the Hallyu Special Award than any other nominee this year.

I readily admit that I am biased. Severely. I am a pre-debut/pre-group-having-a-name/pre-fandom-name fangirl of GOT7. I am even convinced that the Instagram account handlers for the group know of me! Being biased, however, will not take away from the fact that, of all the awards they are nominated for, the Hallyu Special Award is best suited for the 7-member boy band. Here are the top reasons.

1. The Hallyu Special is awarded to performers who gained global popularity during the year

Fans of K-pop are located all over the world so the international award voting opportunities have increased. Since their debut, the rookie group has five international award nominations. These international nominations are based on the group's popularity, supporting the idea that they are well-rounded representations of the direction the global fandom is going.

2. The multiculturalism of the group is a reflection of the growth of the Korean Wave

GOT7 is comprised of 7 members, three of which who are not Korean natives. First, there is Mark Tuan, the oldest member and rapper/flyer of the group, who is Taiwanese American. Next is Thai member Bambam, who at 17 is becoming the fandom's "king of ageyo." Finally, there is Hong Kong native Jackson Wang, who also performs martial arts tricking with Mark. Between these three members, there is a total of 7 languages spoken! Global fans are able to engage with the group in unique ways because of this. Furthermore, the diversity of the Korean native members brings color to the group--the 7 compliment one another with unique experiences based on where and how they lived before becoming a group.

3. Jackson Wang's enthusiasm is a reflection of the impact of the Hallyu

You might not be a fan of GOT7, and you might not be a fan of this particular member, but you have at least heard of him. GOT7's vitamin since debut has been Jackson Wang and the energy he brings forth is similar to how new fans of K-pop feel worldwide. For people who have listened to K-pop for many years, the enthusiasm is often directed towards bias groups. If you are new to the Hallyu, however, you are eager to learn as much as possible and experience new things. This is the same approach GOT7 Jackson has towards his work. He was most vocal about this during introductions on season 2 of reality show "Roommate." Check out the video below at the 4:05 mark.

Much like other fandoms, I GOT7s worldwide are thrilled that GOT7 is earning nominations and look forward to the day the group brings home more awards. Do you think this group should win the Hallyu Special Award at the SMA?
