Big Bang Seungri in Japan, How Has He Done?

Seungri's career in the Japanese media seems to be off to a very good start.

September 1st, Seungri was in Japan. He was attending the promotional event for the premiere of the drama based on the famous comic, "Boy Detective Kim Jun Il." He held a solo fan meeting in Tokyo on August 27th and on September 9th, he appeared on a Japanese variety program "Gachigaseh," and was a guest on three different variety programs on September 9th. This was the official beginning of his career in Japan.

Nowadays, he is more known by his Japanese artist name, V.I, rather than the title of Big Bang and rather than being known for his singing and dancing, he's appeared more times to talk on variety shows. He also has a Japanese nickname 'Seungjjang,' which was incredibly rare for a K-Pop idol.

Ever since July, Seungri moved his main base to Japan and ever since then, he has been incredibly busy in the Japanes emedia. According to his management's official statement, he will be appearing in limited genres of shows. From September 7th to the 30th, he made over 17 different television appearances and radio shows. Mostly he appeared on variety shows and sometimes appeared on music programs as well. He is also the host of a Japanese talk show titled, "V.I from BIGBANG" on Japan's music channel Space Shower TV. On August 15th, he even interviewed the girl group Perfume on Fuji TV.

Of course, his good start is not without criticisms. He is the best at speaking Japanese and boasts a very witty persona on many programs but being on variety shows is very different from being a member on a K-Pop idol group. You can't actually say that his appearances are a critical portion of many of the programs and there are scenes where his small slip-ups in the language create awkward moments. Then there was the big scandal that began on September 13th. A Japanese tabloid revealed a photo of Seungri and his habits in bed, according to an interview with a woman. It was a huge topic in Japan and also in Korea, and many speculated that it would hurt his activities in Japan. However, this is not an uncommon occurrence for Japanese celebrities. It looks like it will just go down in history as a small gossip-like rumour that won't require legal action.

The sad reality is that competition is fierce even within the idol groups. It's not just about being a team and doing everything as a team but many members are now being sold on who they are as individuals. Seungri is alone right now in Japan and he will be alone for a while. What will he show the world in Japan? Will he follow in the footsteps of others who stepped out from their groups and became a big celebrity by themselves?
