JYP Entertainment Denies Claims Of Wonder Girl Sunye Leaving K-Pop

There are conflicting reports on Sunye's continued role in JYP Entertainment girl group Wonder Girls.

Sunye, the leader of Wonder Girls, said that she will not return to the entertainment industry, according to the Korea Daily, the American branch of Korea's Joongang Ilbo. Following initial reports, JYP Entertainment issued a statement that denied the agency's knowledge of Sunye retiring from the Korean music scene.

Sunye renewed her contract with JYP Entertainment and the Wonder Girls in January.

During a performance at a church in New Jersey, Sunye reportedly told congregation that she was retiring from being a singer.

"I enjoyed my life as a singer," the paper reported Sunye saying, "but I would like to share the love of Jesus with people. I will live my life spreading the message."

Sunye and her husband have spent time doing missionary work in Haiti. The two have a daughter together.

In 2013, Sunye became one of the first K-Pop idols of the second generation of Hallyu stars to get married.

JYP Entertainment contradicted Sunye's words in a statement. "Sun [Sunye's stage name for international promotions] still is under contract. What she said has not been agreed on by the company, and we have no statement at this time."

The news comes days after Wonder Girls' Yubin shared a post on Instagram that implied she was practicing for a comeback.

Wonder Girls last promoted "Like This" in Korea in 2012. At the end of 2013, member Sohee left Wonder Girls following the expiration of her contract. In 2014, member Yeeun debuted as a solo artist HA:TFELT. In March 2014, JYP Entertainment confirmed that Wonder Girls would not be disbanding despite Sunye's marriage and Sohee's departure from the group.
