Are The Days Of 2NE1 Almost Over? The Group Will Not Sound The Same Without Park Bom [Opinion]

On December 10, Korean news outlets revealed that Park Bom would be absent from 2NE1's end of the year performance for Seoul Broadcasting System (SBS).

SBS Gayo Daejun is one of the most watched and anticipated Korean entertainment events. SBS Gayo Daejun has expanded to a week-long festival and K-Drama cutie Park Shin Hye will be one of the hosts.

SBS is not only responsible for the music chart show “Inkigayo,” the network is also home to some of the most popular Korean dramas of 2014 including “My Love From The Stars,” “It's Okay, That's Love” and “Pinocchio.” The K-Drama connection of SBS Gayo Daejun has led to fun skits like last year's hilarious K-Pop idol performance of “The Heirs.”

SBS also happens to house the reality show “Roommate,” a program which Bom departed from in July 2014, prior to the launch of its second “season.”

In October 2014, YG Entertainment announced that 2NE1 would not be attending any of the end of the year awards or performances. This announcement preceded a performance by CL at the 2014 Style Icon Awards.

2NE1 and most of the members of Girls' Generation were absent from the 2014 Mnet Music Awards; the Best Female Group award was given to SISTAR, puzzling many fans since Girls' Generation was followed by 2NE1 in the fan vote.

2NE1 will have a chance to regain relevance by performing at SBS Gayo Daejun but at what cost?

One of the most obvious drawbacks of performing as a trio will be the marked absence of Park Bom's trademark voice. Don't get me wrong- CL has a fabulous voice and is undoubtedly one of the strongest female rappers in K-Pop. But from ballads to dance hits, Bom's voice has helped to fuel 2NE1.

Beyond 2NE1, it is the addition of her voice that made the 2006 Big Bang song “Forever With U” so fantastic.

For many fans, this announcement is another warning signal that 2NE1 may be coming to end. 2014 has not been a fantastic year for K-Pop groups and 2NE1 has been impacted by Bom's scandal. Hopefully, the group will deliver a fantastic performance as a trio, that will allow for the return of Park Bom.

What are your thoughts on 2NE1's upcoming performance as a trio?

Do you think the group will be able to carry off the same level of a performance without Bom? Are you concerned that the group is coming to an end?
