Pieta Closes at Box Office with 590,000 Viewers

'Pieta' ended its run, rounding out an audience of 590,000.

According to KOFIC, 'Pieta' ended its run at 9th place at the box office, drawing 4539 audience members on Wednesday. The cumulative number will come to 592,848 tickets sold.

Kim Ki Duk had announced last month that he would pull 'Pieta' from theaters on October 3rd. He had been one of the advocates against certain movies dominating screens in Korea and he's deciding that he'll stick to his promise and his principles.

'Pieta,' which is Kim Ki Duk's 18th movie, had entered in to the Venice Film Festival for competition. After news about it winning the Golden Lion award in Venice, 'Pieta' began to draw huge numbers of viewers to its screens and its screen numbers also increased from 153 to 326. Despite the fact that it's rated R and that it's a very small independent film, it was a great success for him.

Though it was not able to reach the record of "Bad Man" for being Kim Ki Duk's most commercially successful movie, it still drew a considerably sized audience.

On the other hand, 'Masquerade' drew 569,148 audiences on Wednesday, coming in at #1 at the box office. Its cumulative record is 7,220,372. 'Taken 2,' which was also released, drew 206,695 and came in at #2.
