SBS Gayo Awards: Which Performances Were The Best Of The Night? [Poll]

The 2014 SBS Gayo Awards were held on December 21. For the first time since 2007, awards were handed out to some of the top stars in K-pop, along with some of the hottest performances of 2014.

The SBS Gayo Awards (also referred to the Gayo Daejun), are known for its incorporation of innovative stages and themes, which reflect pop culture trends in Korea.

This year, SBS formed the special group Lucky Boys, which consisted of idols from top groups such as CNBLUE, INFINITE, WINNER, 2PM, and B1A4. Jung Yong Hwa represented CNBLUE, while L was present for INFINITE. WINNER’s Mino took the stage as part of Super 5, along with 2PM’s Nichkhun and Baro of B1A4. With their suited looks and idol charm, the Lucky Boys were a highlight of the Gayo Awards. Song Ji Hyo of “Running Man” fame joined the Lucky Boys on the stage for hosting responsibilities.

The evening presented the opportunity for fans to watch unique collaborative stages and to witness the return of artists like 2NE1 to the end of the year award scene.

Lucky Boys opening stage

The SBS Gayo Awards were opened by the special group Lucky Boys which consisted of Jung Yong Hwa, L, Mino, Nichkhun, and Baro. It was a rousing stage, which left fans of each idol debating over whose performance was the best.

Epik High’s Stage of “Born Hater” featuring Bobby & B.I

Epik High opened their performance with a hip-hop sequence prior to taking the stage. Skeptics of their move to YG Entertainment were proven wrong in 2014 through the strength of songs like “Born Hater” off of their album “Shoebox.” Bobby and B.I, who have yet to debut in iKON, have demonstrated their potential as the hottest new rappers in K-pop, who along with WINNER’s Mino, are ready to usher in a sound for Korean music.

2NE1’s Performance of “Crush” & “Come Back Home”

2NE1 were the recipients of the Best Girl Group award at the 2014 SBS Gayo Awards. The group performed as a trio, minus Park Bom, and pulled off the stage. CL and Dara held down the vocals, delivering an excellent stage. “Come Back Home” was definitely the stronger of the two songs.

 Orange Caramel Christmas Stage of “Catallena”

Orange Caramel were the perfect choice for an adorable Christmas stage of “Catallena.” The After School sub-group is beginning to come out of obscurity in 2014, gaining recognition from the New York City-based publication The Village Voice and MTV Iggy. BTOB and Akdong Musician also performed Christmas-themed stages but Orange Caramel stood out for their overall cloying sweet performance.

EXO “Overdose”

EXO brought the evening to a conclusion with their grand performance of “Overdose.” The group has been utilizing the opportunity to reinvent their image as ten members during the end of the year shows.

G-Dragon & Taeyang’s “Good Boy”

“Good Boy” is still as thrilling to watch on stage as it was during the debut performance at the 2014 Mnet Asian Music Awards. The collaboration between G-Dragon and Taeyang has proven to be successful enough that it undoubtedly not be the last time they release a hip-hop duet.

Honorable Mention: CNBLUE’s Jung Yong Hwa’s Acoustic Performance Of “Star”

Jung Yong Hwa delivered a solid acoustic performance in the special stage which was included. Seeing Kwanghee and Kangnam act like fanboys in the predominantly female crowd was an added plus.
