Non-Koreans Are Rushing to Korea to Audition Overseas

Many people of different ethnicities are participating in K-pop auditions. Back in July, YG Entertainment held auditions in Toronto, Canada. It was said that "about 60% of the occupants who wished to audition had no Korean background whatsoever" and this statement also applied to those whom auditioned in London, Seattle, New York and Berlin.

As the popularity of K-pop grows, with acts such as Girls' Generation, 2NE1 and Psy, many non-Koreans are attempting to get signed by Korean Entertainment companies.

A representative at JYP stated, "About five years ago, only Korean Americans came to audition. That has changed steadily," which shows that the K-Pop following has become bigger and bigger as the years go on. This could hopefully open up new doors and maybe even create more diverse groups in the Idol industry.

The percentage of ethnicities varies from Japanese, Chinese, Thai, and Canadian to Australian-20 percent at SM Entertainment, 40 percent at JYP Entertainment and 10 percent at YG Entertainment. So far, the K-Pop industry has started to become more diverse; having Chinese members in Korean groups, such as Jia and Fei from miss A; Victoria from f(x), as well as Thai member Nichkhun who is an avid member of popular male group 2PM. Although they are still in the 'Asian' category of race; fans are hoping that it will become more diverse.

In YG Entertainment, there is a young female by the name of Michelle Lee, who happens to be half-black, like Yoon Mirae and Insooni. Her looks are very different, resembling the African-American in her, rather than the Korean. That is something fairly new to Korean culture and is a big step towards becoming a more diverse group of idols.

A professor by the name of Hwang Yong Suk, who teaches at Konkuk University stated, "If a multiethnic idol group is created, it will lower the entry barrier to foreign markets and K-Pop could become more influential."
