'The Interview' Reviewed As 'Extremely Mediocre:' Critics And Watchers Offended By Homophobic And Racist Jokes; Social Media Reaction Split Along Positive And Negative Lines [PHOTO]

"The Interview" opened in more than 300 movie theaters across the United States on Christmas Day, and attracted many sell-out audiences who claimed they were championing freedom of expression. However, the film itself met many negative reviews from both critics and moviegoers for its offensive jokes.

According to Business Clarksville, the premise of the film goes like this:  "Dave Skylark (James Franco) and his producer Aaron Rapoport (Seth Rogen) run the popular celebrity tabloid TV show 'Skylark Tonight.'  When they discover that North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un is a fan of the show, they land an interview with him in an attempt to legitimize themselves as journalists. However, when the two prepare to travel to Pyongyang, their plans change when the CIA recruits them to assassinate Kim Jong-un."

The plot itself was seen as controversial, and Retuers reports that major U.S. theater chains pulled out of showing it in theaters due to threats of violence by Guardians of Peace, a computer hacking group that claimed responsibility for a destructive cyber attack on Sony last month.

When the film was finally released - both in theaters and online - Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 50% rating, and some viewers admitted they were only viewing the film out of a perceived patriotic duty.

But is patriotic duty actually an important element of the movie? Not really. Emily Yoshida of The Verge wrote, "Just as it's our right as Americans to put out any dumb, racist, homophobic, misogynistic comedy that also happens to depict the fiery death of a sitting political leader, it's also our right to not give a shit about said comedy. Not only is there nothing revolutionary about 'The Interview,' there is nothing revolutionary about the screening and viewing of 'The Interview.'"

Christine Anne Piesyk of Business Clarksville adds, "The film makes fun of the celebrity mania that passes for news, or rather, takes our eyes off real news and puts it, well, anywhere else."
