Holiday Box Office [UPDATE]: Angelina Jolie's ‘Unbroken' Surprises With Christmas Day Win, ‘Into The Woods' And ‘The Hobbit: Battle Of The Five Armies' Round Off Top 3

It would appear that people were looking for a good cry this Christmas day as the box office this weekend appears to be led by a tearjerker.

It makes sense when you consider the stress of holidays. And maybe the fact that "The Interview" didn't get a wide release.

The early box office numbers from Christmas day are pouring in, and despite predicts, "Unbroken" is in the lead spot currently. Following "Unbroken" is the other new release this week "Into the Woods." The final spot in the top three went to holdover from previous weeks, "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies."

So far, "Unbroken" has gotten mixed reviews from critics, but this hasn't stopped people from heading to the theaters to see the film. In fact, the film being a tearjerker seems to be validated by the following fan tweets (via Twitchy).

"Unbroken was so good, I cried most of the movie," tweeted Homeguurl.

"I cried way more then I should have in Unbroken," said Haylee Gayle Schreen.

"Unbroken. I cried so much. What an amazing and inspiring movie!" exclaimed Adinah.

"Just watched Unbroken. I cried. A lot," stated Samantha.

According to Deadline, "Unbroken," which is the second directorial effort from Angelina Jolie, took in an estimated $15.6 million on Christmas day and is on track to finish the week around the $30 million mark.

While some were crying their eyes out, others were enjoying the Christmas feel of a musical in the form of "Into the Woods." The Disney film starring Anna Kendrick and Meryl Streep came in a close second with a flat $15 million. According to Box Office Pro, it should take in $47 million by Sunday.

The top three films on Christmas were rounded off by Peter Jackson's last adventure in Middle Earth, "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies." The fantasy epic is set to end it's week at $157 million domestically.
