Japanese Company Cyber Agent’s Ameba Releases New Promo For Dating Simulator Girls Mobile Game ‘Boyfriend (Beta)’ [VIDEO]

Admittedly, dating simulator games are kind of a Japanese phenomenon that has held limited export for fans outside of the country. Save for the somewhat surprising fame of the "Catherine" Playstation 3 game, English speaking fans seem to find dating simulator games problematic.

Slate actually called "Catherine" possibly the most sexist video game of all time.

Nevertheless, dating simulator games still have a large enough fan base that new ones continue to be rolled out, especially for the mobile smartphone platform. One of the latest dating simulators, alternative to "Catherine," appeals to mostly women and girls in its particular form of fan service. Those interested can see what I mean in the all new promotional video for "Boyfriend (Beta)."

Anime fans, who are perhaps quite used to fan service in the form of having multiple members of the opposite sex interested in one protagonist (see Harem anime), seemed to be quite amused by the new promotional video for "Boyfriend (Beta)."

"Is this gonna get an anime where it's just cute boys doing cute things minus any female MC too?" Kitsuneshoujo playfully commented on Crunchyroll.

"And now you just killed me *death by nose bleed*," said Setok9, referring to the common anime trope of a nosebleed in response to seeing something arousing.

The new game, as well as the promotional ads, are reportedly in celebration of Ameba's first anniversary as a social networking service. The game "Boyfriend (Beta)" is the quasi-sister game to "Girlfriend (Beta)," which was released for boys earlier this year. "Boyfriend (Beta)" became available for download on December 13, 2013 and has since attracted over 1.5 million users according to Crunchyroll.

While dating simulators will probably remain mostly popular in Japan, it should be noted that a similar company has English dating sim mobile games entitled "Shall We Date?" in the Google play store. According to the NTT Solmare official website, the series has attracted over 3 million users.
