Nostalgia Sweeps The Nation As 90's Hits Reappear On Korean Music Charts

The 90's are making a comeback in South Korea.

With dramas like Answer Me 1997 and films like Sunny bring nostalgia on screen, it was only a matter of time before K-pop from the 90's became the trend. Thanks to the variety show Infinite Challenge, that's exactly the case. Songs by idol groups like Turbo and S.E.S returned to the music charts shortly after Infinite Challenge began airing a weeks-long special devoted to 90's music.

The Infinite Challenge series known as "TOTOGA," standing for "Saturday Saturday Is A Singer," invited popular music stars from the 1990's to reunite on stage and perform.

After the performances aired, songs from the 90's returned to the Korean music charts. Turbo's "Love Is," from 1998, even reached the number one spot on several Korean music charts.

Popular idol groups from the 90's, including Turbo, S.E.S, Cool, and Jinusean, reunited for the show. This was one of the first times that the idol group members reunited to perform in recent years. However, due to Eugene's pregnancy, S.E.S was joined by Girls' Generation's Seohyun; Turbo also only appeared with two of its three original members.

1990's solo artists like Lee Jung Hyun, Jo Sung Mo, Uhm Jung Hwa, and others also appeared on "TOTOGA."

The singers performed their stages like they promoted them in the 90's, including dramatic stage outfits and concepts.

Infinite Challenge's ratings also saw a considerable boost due to music lovers who pined for the songs of their youth.
