Billboard, 'MU:CON Seoul 2012 Focuses On All Things PSY'

Various South Korean government organizations came together and held the first international music conference in Seoul on Nov. 1-3. Despite the absence of some guests due to Hurricane Sandy, the event became a success.

Billboard Biz says the conference "was hosted by the Korean Creative Content Agency, another governmental organization, which has made it its mission to encourage the export of Korean music and K-pop in particular."

Though the discussions were mainly on K-Pop in general, the focus on Psy was inevitable. His success in the Korean market and worldwide grabbed the attention of many that his name was actively mentioned non-stop at the conference.

John Hirai, Head of Music in YouTube (Japan and Korea), spoke up and said, "I've been in the music industry 25 years and I've never seen anything like this. I never thought I'd see this kind of impact from an Asian artist." As Psy becomes a role model and influence to the Korean artists, Hirai "urged Korean artists to follow in PSY's footsteps by uploading their music videos to YouTube and using the platform as a means of promotion."

Hirai added that with the boom of K-Pop and "Gangnam Style", YouTube plans to live stream performances in Asia about K-Pop, J-Pop, and C-Pop.

It seems that this may be the beginning for Asian music to do greater things.

While Psy became the main topic at MU:CON Seoul 2012, he is currently in the UK for 3-days promoting "Gangnam Style" as well as speaking at Oxford University.
