Shinhwa Member Andy Lee Apologizes For 2013 Gambling Scandal Prior To Group's 12th Album Release

While K-pop's longest-running boy band Shinhwa prepares to return with their 12th studio album on February 26, the members appeared on the latest episode of the SBS talk show Healing Camp where things got pretty emotional.

The episode marked Andy Lee's return to the group after taking a year-long hiatus following an illegal gambling scandal in late 2013.

While discussing the events that led up to his temporary withdrawal from Shinhwa, Lee issued a heartfelt apology to fans and viewers for his behavior. “As an individual and as a celebrity, I want to say that I’m sorry for causing any concern as a result of my disgraceful actions," he said.

In November 2013, Lee was caught up in an illegal gambling scandal and was indicted on charges for betting on soccer matches. The singer ultimately ended up paying a 5 million KRW (approximately $5,000 USD) fine and withdrawing from the public spotlight for more than a year.

"I will be suspending all of my activities and reflecting on my actions," Lee told the Korea Star Daily in November 2013, shortly after news of the gambling scandal was made public. He also withdrew from Shinhwa's weekly television program, Shinhwa Broadcast.

During the February 23 Healing Camp episode, Lee took a moment to recognize the continued support from the other Shinhwa members. “I have been so thankful and also so sorry to all of you since our debut 17 years ago," he said.

His words were met by consolation from group mate Kim Dong Wan. "You can be sorry to the fans, but there is no need to be sorry to us," Kim replied. "We’ve all received help from one another over the years. All of us have caused issues, and we’ve all understood. I want to say that you don’t need to be sorry anymore.”

Shinhwa plans to return with the single "Sniper" from their 12th album, We, on February 26.
