f(x)'s Amber Liu Explains Her Androgynous Style And Overcoming Bullying Due To Her Looks

Through her work with f(x), Amber Liu has popularized her unique looks and performance style, but recent interviews illustrated that that wasn't always the case.

On Monday, Dazed unveiled an interview with Amber discussing her solo debut. Here, the 22-year-old talked about her journey in embracing her androgynous style.

"It's a big culture thing," said Amber. "I understand that people are going to question it. With anything new, if it's weird or cool it will catch people's attention. But slowly that new thing, if it catches on, it becomes a trend itself. I'm seeing a lot more tomboys in Korea on the street and I do hear less of, 'Why don't you dress like a girl?' Now a lot of people are accepting towards women's different styles and characteristics."

On the most recent episode of "4 Things Show," Amber also revealed her childhood struggles in dealing with being different from her peers.

"I'm not like an ordinary girl and I behave very briskly, so there was no choice but to misunderstand me," said the f(x) rapper according to allkpop.

"When I was young, no matter where I would go (even Korea), people pestered me a lot, so I was often alone. People avoided me a lot because of the way I looked. They judged, avoided, bothered and cursed at me for no reason. I hid this problem from my family. I was embarrassed at first."

But, Amber revealed the lesson she learned from those who didn't accept her, which reportedly inspired the new ballad "Beautiful" off of her solo EP by the same name.

"What I learned from watching people like that was to never judge somebody based on their appearance," she said. "Each person has his or her own charm and it is beautiful to show it as it is."
