The Asian Music Lover's Guide To SXSW 2015

On March 17, the Music Festival portion of South by Southwest (SXSW) will begin at locations in and around Austin, Texas. SXSW 2015 will provide fans of Korean pop, rock, and Asian music with the opportunity to see some of their favorite acts deliver live performances in the United States.

K-Pop Night Out

The preeminent event for K-pop fans at SXSW is K-Pop Night Out, which will be held at the Elysium on Thursday, March 20. The lineup at K-Pop Night Out will include YG Entertainment's hip-hop trio Epik High, the adorable girl group Crayon Pop, and SM Entertainment electronic dance personality Hitchhiker.

Hitchhiker is the alter ego of SM Entertainment's producer, Choi Jin Woo. He is responsible for producing several songs for the agency including Girls' Generation's “Hoot” and EXO's “My Lady.” His alternative personality is similar to Diplo's Major Lazer or the Korean artist, Primary.

K-Pop Night Out will also feature independent artists including '60s revival group The Barberettes, who infuse the sounds of iconic female acts like The Ronettes into Korean indie pop.

Asian Chairshot, EE, and Eastern Sidekick are also included in the lineup of K-Pop Night Out performers.

EE is a husband-wife electronic duo who were the only Korean act to perform at Coachella. Their style is best described as performance pop art. In addition to their music career, EE are responsible for music videos for artists include Yoon Mi Rae and Drunken Tiger.

Eastern Sidekick is a rock band on Fluxus Music, the same label as From the Airport and Classiquai Project.

Korea Night II: Seoulsonic

The stars of the film “Ktown Cowboy” will host the Seoulsonic showcase on Friday, March 20 at The Majestic.

The showcase will include electronic dance artists From the Airport, The Solutions, HEO, Big Phony, Victim Mentality and YB.

From the Airport performed at Culture Collide in California and CMJ Music Marathon in 2014. The duo performs a unique style of electro-clash that is reminiscent of the sounds of groups like the now defunct act, Does It Offend You, Yeah?

YB (Yoon Do Hyun Band) is a hard rock group who released “Cigarette Girl,” a 2014 single for the U.S. market. Yoon Do Hyun recently collaborated with CNBLUE's Jung Yong Hwa on his solo album, One Fine Day. The song is of two hard rock tracks on the album, including the JJ Lin collaboration “Checkmate.”

YB will follow this showcase with an appearance on Saturday, March 21 at Lucille.

The Solutions will present this distinctive sound of rock while HEO will deliver an avante garde performance,

Korean folk band Big Phony will also appear at the showcase.

Victim Mentality is a Korean glam metal band who is set to release their first full length album Heavy Metal is Back.

No Brain will perform at Lucille on Saturday, March 21.

No Brain are considered the founding fathers of Korean punk rock. The group helped to set the tone for Korean indie music along with No Brain.

The traditional Korean music duo 숨[su:m] will deliver three performances during the music festival.

Vietnam

Suboi is the first female rapper to become famous in Vietnam. She is the first artist from Vietnam to perform at SXSW and was included in MTV Iggy's 2015 Asian music forecast.

Taiwan

The Taiwanese music showcase, Taiwan Music Reaching Out to the World, will be held on March 21 at Icenhauer's. Echo, OVDS, Toffee, The Sound of Human, and Dwagie will perform at the event.

Notable acts at this showcase include the dream pop group Echo and the traditional instrumental infused sounds of Toffee.

Toffee is an indie pop infused with hip-hop. The group is a trio with a featured rapper, with a sound which ranges from Chinese standards from the '40s to pop tracks like “Cheese.” “Vintage Love” is their homage to retro Chinese pop.

OVDS are a punk-infused electronic dance group. Their sound is reminiscent of Does It Offend You, Yeah or Knife Party.

The Sound of Human is a shoegaze group whose sound, like Echo, exemplifies the diversity of the Taiwan's independent music scene.

China

Tang Trio is a funk rock trio from Beijing.

Howie Lee is an atmospheric electronic artist from Beijing.

Pakistan

Controversial Pakistani rapper Adil Omar is included in the hip-hop lineup.

Myanmar

Side Effect is an indie rock band from Myanmar. The group played SXSW 2014 and were the first performers from Myanmar to appear at the festival.

Japan
Celebrate St. Patrick's Day with Perfume. The electronic J-pop group will perform at Highland on Tuesday, March 17.
