Korean Music Industry, Moving From K-Pop Idol Groups to Solo Singers?

Experts are now saying that the strength of idol groups is diminishing. Recently, the music charts have been dominated by solo artists starting with Psy, then Naul, Lee Hi, Son Dam Bi and Lee Seung Gi.

On Tuesday, most of the portal charts showed that out of the Top 10, 8 of them were solo singers. Lee Seung Gi is currently at #1 with his new song and with this, solo singers are taking away the places long held by K-Pop idol groups.

Wonder Girls leader Sun most recently revealed that she was getting married and they refuted all rumors of the team breaking up or Sun leaving Wonder Girls. It's said that they may go off and do solo activities, which is more proof of the changing trends.

As the solo artists become stronger, many expect that there will be big changes in the K-Pop idol group market.

With the success of "Respond 1997" and the fact that it drew out the nostalgia of the 90s for those in their twenties, many expected that the tides would change from the K-Pop idol groups to solo artists or solo members.

Despite this, we can't say that the age of the idol groups are over. The current trends show that it's moving towards solo artists and it means that the market as a whole might be looking back at itself and going retro.

The audition programs gaining popularity is also a testament to the fact that the audiences are more focused on those with actual talent, who are able to rise up above the rest. Singers like Park Ji Min, Lee Hi, Huh Gak, Kim Bo Kyung, and John Park are all solo singers from audition programs.

It's said that people expect 2013 to be dominated by solo singers rather than the K-Pop idols. It's also said that the stars of the 90s like Kang Su Ji and Kim Wan Sun may come back and people are wondering just how impactful their returns will be.
