Jodi Arias Trial Update Today: Arias Retrial Ends In Mistrial After 11-1 Vote; Security Ordered For Holdout Jodi Arias Juror

Jodi Arias Trial Update Today: The penalty phase of the Jodi Arias trial ended in mistrial after the jury voted 11 to 1 for the death penalty. The deadlock took the death penalty off the table and left a Judge Sherry Stephens to decide whether to sentence Arias to life in prison or to life with the possibility of release after 25 years. The decision is expected to be made during an April 13 hearing.

Arizona Central reported that the woman responsible for keeping Jodi Arias alive is officially known as juror No. 17. According to reports, the other jurors tried to kick Juror 17 from the jury before she could vote against the death penalty.

Authorities ordered the juror who voted to spare the life of convicted murderer Jodi Arias to be protected after her name was posted on the Twitter social network. According to court records, Juror 17 is a Hispanic woman in her 30s who grew up with domestic violence and was abused by her ex-husband.

According to reports, authorities said that there were no reports of threats against any of the 12 jurors in the sentencing retrial. Prosecutors announced that they will investigate whether the Arias holdout disclosed that her husband had been prosecuted by the same county attorney who headed the case against Arias.

Jodi Arias was convicted of first-degree murder on May 8, 2013 in the June 2008 death of Travis Alexander, but the jury couldn't reach a unanimous decision on whether to sentence the former waitress to death or life in prison.

Alexander was found murdered in the shower of his Mesa, Ariz., home in June 2008. Alexander's throat had been violently slit, he was stabbed 27 times and shot in the head.

In Arizona, capital-murder trials have three parts. First, a jury has to find the person guilty of first-degree murder. Jodi Arias was found guilty on May 8, 2013. Second, jurors decide whether there were any aggravating factors. The jury found that the murder was committed in an especially cruel fashion one week later.
