Megan Lee Clarifies Details Of Her New Nickelodeon Show 'Make It Pop' Prior To Premiere

“Make It Pop” is an upcoming children’s live action show which will air on the American television network, Nickelodeon. The program was initially billed by American media as a domestic take on Korean pop but has recently clarified its description as K-pop inspired.

Korean-American actress-turned Korean pop vocalist Megan Lee will lead the cast of “Make It Pop” as Sun Hee, an aspiring singer who attempts to strike out in the music industry while studying at an international prep school.

Although, Lee is currently described by many mainstream outlets as a YouTube star, she debuted in Korea as a solo vocalist on Soulshop.

The actress provided better insight regarding the show, during a recent interview with the blog BTS Celebs. In the interview, Lee clarified that “Make It Pop” is not an American K-pop show and will not have idols as guests for the first season.

When asked if there would be any K-pop guest appearances since it has been considered by many to be a Korean pop show, she stated, "A lot of people have misunderstood that this show is about or based on K-pop, but actually it’s not.”

The Nickelodeon star went on to provide further context about the program’s billing as a K-pop inspired show, “The show was created and inspired by some of the very colorful parts of the K-Pop industry [outfits and concepts of famous girl groups] which is why the theme of the show is very bright and colorful."

She recently shared the song "Now Here I Am," from the show. "Now Here I Am" is an uptempo pop track which is performed in English, while reflecting the diverse musicality that is exemplified by Korean music.

K-pop fans have delivered mixed reactions to the upcoming Nickelodeon show, “Make It Pop.” In 2012, Nickelodeon produced a made for television film featuring Wonder Girls. The program premiered before America was hit with “Gangnam Style” and received low ratings. Many K-pop fans have pointed to this Nick Cannon production as a precedent that could impact “Make It Pop.”

Prominent figures in the Asian American community also expressed their concerns about “Make It Pop.” The initial description of the program led many people to believe that the children’s show would feature a cast that was predominantly Asian. However, the cast will reflect the multicultural dynamics of an international school.

“Make It Pop” is also the latest example of a Hollywood production which is led by an Asian American star. While the number of Hollywood television shows that feature Asian actors has increased, most are bolstered by stereotypical portrayals of pan-Asian culture. Asian actors are often cast in roles other than their actual nationality, substantiating the notion that every country in the region is the same. While recent sit-coms like "Fresh Off The Boat” and “Selfie” are examples of the stereotypical portrayal of Asian American adults in Hollywood, “Make It Pop” has the potential to provide a nuanced perspective to children and teens.
