Jodi Arias Trial Update Today: Arias Barred From Video Chats And Jail Calls For Six Weeks

Jodi Arias Trial Update Today: Jodi Arias has been banned from jail calls and video chats unless they are related to legal matters.

The penalty phase of the Jodi Arias trial ended in mistrial after the jury voted 11 to 1 for the death penalty. The deadlock took the death penalty off the table and left a Judge Sherry Stephens to decide whether to sentence Arias to life in prison or to life with the possibility of release after 25 years. The decision is expected to be made during an April 13 hearing.

On Thursday, March 12, the Maricopa County sheriff's office said the jail will enforce disciplinary restrictions for six weeks. Sheriff Joe Arpaio said that Arias violated several rules.

"Arias needs to understand that while she is in my jail, she is to obey all the rules and breaking them has consequences," Arpaio said in a statement.

The sheriff said Arias tried to avoid having her conversations monitored by using other inmates to make phone calls for her. The Sheriff's office also said Arias talked to minors through the jail's video visitation system.

Arias also had the privilege of ordering commissary items suspended. Arias be limited to two vegetarian meals served daily by the jail. Arpaio claims Arias sometimes spend around $100 in a week on candy and other food items.

Arpaio banned 10 regular Arias' visitors, including two 15-year-olds, earlier in the week. The sheriff said the visitors violated visitation rules like using cellphones to take pictures Other visitors used false names to gain access to Arias.

Arizona Central reported that the woman responsible for keeping Jodi Arias alive, officially known as juror No. 17, been receiving death threats. On Thursday Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery called for an end to the threats. He said the threats have no justification and jury decisions "must be respected if we are to expect fellow citizens to willingly serve in the future," he said.

Jodi Arias was convicted of first-degree murder on May 8, 2013 in the June 2008 death of Travis Alexander, but the jury couldn't reach a unanimous decision on whether to sentence the former waitress to death or life in prison. Alexander was found murdered in the shower of his Mesa, Ariz., home in June 2008. Alexander's throat had been violently slit, he was stabbed 27 times and shot in the head.
