K-Pop Crossover: Lack Of Asian Men On Nickelodeon's New Hallyu-Inspired Sitcom 'Make It Pop' Questioned In AsAmNews Op-Ed

Nickelodeon's "Make It Pop" may be the network's attempt at more Asian diversity in their youth programming, but for one AsAmNews contributor writing under the name "Randall," the K-pop-inspired series is a slap in the face.

On March 2, Nickelodeon uploaded the first trailer for "Make It Pop," featuring Korean singer Megan Lee. While the lineup features several Asian cast members there do not appear to be any Asian male leads.

"Excluding Asian men in K-pop is like going to Hooters without scantily clad waitresses...nobody wins," Randall wrote in a scathing opinion column published Saturday on the Asian-American news website.

"Only white guys are in the show as the love interests for the Asian girls. The producer began to answer the question seriously and said he was hoping to get Psy to play the father of the main Korean girl. Mentally, I was shaking my head in disappointment."

The show is also receiving mixed reactions from Hallyu fans, as there is confusion over whether the show is really about K-pop or is simply cashing in on the trendiness of South Korean pop.

Lee's comments in a recent interview with BTS Celebs did little to assuage those fears.

"A lot of people have misunderstood that this show is about or based on K-pop, but actually it's not," said the star of "Make It Pop."

"The show was created and inspired by some of the very colorful parts of the K-pop industry, which is why the theme of the show is very bright and colorful."

Lee also expressed her view that "Make It Pop" is not trying to be a show about K-pop, in an interview with YouTuber JREKML.

"Our show is very cute and very colorful, and we know that there are a lot of different aspects of K-pop where it's very cute and colorful, but we don't want to portray that that's what it's all about," Lee said.

"K-pop is such a huge...big umbrella. It has all sorts of genres. We're sprinkling some of that K-pop influence."

"Make It Pop" premieres on Nickelodon in April.
